The ‘Wagatha Christie’ trial: update from a solicitor

Rebekah Vardy is suing Coleen Rooney for libel after Coleen accused her of leaking stories to the press. This multimillion pound case between the footballers wives has continued to excite interest and is now entering its final days at the High Court in London.

So what is the case about?

Coleen believed that someone was leaking information to the press and carried out her own detective work of who she thought was responsible. Coleen posted fake stories on her Instagram and restricted who could read them to see if the stories ended up in the press, and they did. Coleen revealed on Twitter that it was Rebekah’s Vardy’s account. Rebekah denied this stating that others had access to her account. When no public apology came from Coleen, Rebekah sued for libel.

The reality of this libel case is that the legal costs is likely to be far greater than any damages that might be awarded. The Judge has repeatedly pleaded for them to settle the matter out of court but neither of them have backed down. This case being an example of proportionality of costs in that the winner will still lose when it comes to costs, even if damages are awarded.

The case is scheduled to finish on Wednesday after seven days of public hearing. Mrs Justice Steyn will hand down judgement at a later date.
