Dementia Friends

At Fishers Solicitors we have two Dementia Friends, Guy Birtwistle, Partner and Head of Tax and Trusts and Jayne Parsons, Head of Wills and Probate.

“A Dementia Friend is somebody that learns about dementia so they can help their community.

Too many people affected by dementia feel that society fails to understand the condition they live with. Dementia Friends help by raising awareness and understanding, so that people living with dementia can continue to live in the way they want.”

People who have dementia frequently require assistance in order to carry out daily tasks and feel a part of their society. Dementia Friends educates people about dementia and the simple things they can do to help those who are affected by it.

Dementia Friends is an Alzheimer’s Society initiative being funded by the Government. It aims to create a network of a million Dementia Friends across England by 2015 who will help their communities to become more aware of dementia.

Dementia is caused by a number of diseases that affect the brain. The most common is Alzheimer's but diseases also include vascular dementia, dementia with Lewy bodies and Pick's disease.

Different types of dementia affect the brain at different rates and in different ways, but other things like someone's personal circumstances, the people around them and the environment in which they live, will affect their experience of dementia. Dementia progresses in a way that is unique to each individual.

While it is true that more people over 65 have dementia but it is not exclusively an older person's disease – younger people get dementia too.

At Fishers we feel it is important we can do whatever it takes to improve the service we offer our clients. As many of our, Wills and Probate clients are elderly, we feel that by being a part of Dementia Friends we are fully equipped to help clients and family members of clients who have Dementia.
