The National Forest is growing the future together.
As one of the boldest environmentally-led regeneration initiatives in the country, a post-industrial landscape has been transformed by creating a forest across 200 square miles of the Midlands, linking the ancient remnant forests of Charnwood and Needwood across parts of Leicestershire, Derbyshire and Staffordshire.
More than 9.5 million trees have been planted so far, and it is these trees that have been the catalyst for change. Forest cover has increased from 6% to 25% - more than twice the national average, more than 8,000 hectares of new biodiversity rich habitats have been transformed, over half a million children have experienced outdoor learning, and more than 5,000 jobs have been created in the tourism industry. All in the space of just 30 years.
The National Forest’s vision takes a more dynamic approach to the challenges faced by our environment, society and economy, finding innovative solutions that benefit all three simultaneously. This is real sustainability in action. In partnership, in a real place. It’s a model that can be taken and used elsewhere. Not by creating panic and guilt, but by growing hope and confidence, because the Forest has a track record of creating change.
